"This doesn't mean we stop existing as individuals, but it could mean we become more fully aware of every other living being, much in the way a coral reef's individual organisms respond to one another as if they were part of the same, single body." - Douglas Rushkoff (Author of 'Cyberia')
Most Spiritual paths teach that everything begins with thought - A Course in Miracles teaches that, at the level of mind, we are one, that there are no neutral thoughts, and that we "are not alone in experiencing the effects of our thinking." Abraham-Hicks consider thought the basis of creation, and the law of Attraction - the focus of our thoughts is what we manifest. Many Faiths profess that there is only one human family, and that our Spiritual reality is an interconnected community of souls united in the Mind of God/dess.
In Reclaiming Your Sacred Path, I discuss that we are autonomous Spiritual beings having a physical experience and yet, most of our real life lessons - the lessons we as souls incarnated this time to learn - are learned in relationship and engagement with each other. That is certainly true of our intimate relationships, friendships, and our immediate communities. And it is also true of our global community.
Technology consists of a set of tools, no different from a hammer, a Rosary, an Athame. As with those tools, we have to ask about purpose. What is the purpose to which we will put our computers, smartphones, hammers, Athames, Rosaries? Toward what end will you direct your energy, offer your prayers, join materials with your hammer and nails?
I do not believe that technology is neutral, or that its impact is only based on how we use it. It changes the world by its very existence, and we must respond to its presence, and make a choice that is no different from our choice in anything else - between love and fear.
Like many people, I have at times spent far too much time on Facebook. My smartphone, which has 10,000 times the memory and storage of my first work computer, has been used for solitaire more often than I care to admit.
Like no time in the past, we are capable of forming, and learning from, relationships with individuals separated by what used to be impossible distances. On a monthly basis, The global Correllian Tradition conducts dozens of on-line rituals using chat rooms and over video links that create deep feelings of connection among participants from North America, South America, the UK, Europe, and more.
On tomorrow night's radio show, Ed Hubbard and I will be discussing technology, Spirituality and the future of both, and how we can make the choice about technology and Spirit.
The choice to do no harm.
